Masala Popcorn

- recipe by Dahlia submitted on 09-05-2012

(Spicy Popcorn, Movie night snacks, Curried Popcorn)

Ingredients
Popping corn kernels - 1/2 cup
Butter - 1-2 tblsp

Flavoring
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Red Chilly Powder - 1/2 tsp
Cumin Powder - 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala - 1/4 tsp
Amchoor (Dry Mango) Powder - 1/4 tsp

Salt - to taste

Method
1. Take a large heavy bottomed vessel and melt the butter.
2. Add the popping corn seeds and all the ingredients under 'flavoring'.
3. Mix with a spoon so that all the corn seeds gets coated with the butter and the spices.
4. Cover with a lid and let it pop on a medium low heat.
5. When the poping sound reduces, remove the vessel from the stove immediately to prevent the popcorn from getting burnt.

Microwave Method
1. Mix all the above ingredients in a deep microwave safe dish.
2. Cover with a lid and microwave on high for 2 minutes. (or till the poping sound reduces.)
3. Carefully remove the contents wearing a gloves. The contents will be super hot.

Enjoy spicy masala popcorn with a cup of tea on a rainy day or with soda while watching a movie.

Variations
  - You can pretty much use any spice mix to make your masala popcorn. Try using some store bought curry powder, pav bhaji masala or tandoori chicken masala.
  - Try using tamarind pulp instead of amchoor powder to make 'tamarind popcorn'.

Tip
  - Popcorn increases by more than 10 times in volume after popping. So use a large vessel accordingly to make the popcorn.

I made the mistake of making this recipe and learned three things:
1) Never tell your friends/family how good it is otherwise you'll be making it all the time, for yourself and all the new masala popcorn eaters you know!! :)
2) Double the spices and watch out!! Mmmmm good! Absolutely love this popcorn!!
3) You cannot live on masala popcorn alone. It is fiber, so that's good, but after a few days, you should really start incorporating fruits, veggies and protein into your new masala diet!!

Thanks for the recipe! I'm trying to replicate some awesome Savory Masala Popcorn I buy regularly at Amazon. This popcorn here: http://www.amazon.com/Masala-Pop-Popcorn-Indian-s...

I eat this stuff everyday and thought it might be fun to try making it myself.

Try it out Dan and give your feedback..

One doubt, when i add the masala it burns - and the popcorn has burnt pieces around it - rather than how the flavor coats evenly in store bought ones. How to get that?
Person Dahlia (S.I.R. Author)   (July 16, 2014)
Did you keep on medium low heat??? The masala wont burn in low heat...

Similarly, the butter and masala should coat the corn kernels completely before they start popping.... The final product will then be coated with the spices.... Do not reduce the amount of butter....

How many people does this serve?
Person Dahlia (S.I.R. Author)   (April 2, 2014)
Depends on how much you eat !!! In my house, this is perfect for 2 adults and 2 kids..

I thought this would be a little more flavorful than it was but it was overall pretty good. I would make this again.
Person Dahlia (S.I.R. Author)   (August 8, 2013)
Hi Nija, You can double the spices to suit to your taste. The measurements given here are for moderate spice level. It will be suitable for the general public including kids and old people. Feel free to modify it to your spice level. Infact, I add twice the amount of spice when I make for myself.
