Tomato Curry

Tomato Curry or Thakkali Kurma is a delicious curry that can be made with some basic ingredients. It goes well with white rice, chapathi, idli and dosa.

Recipe For Tomato Curry

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • Shallot Onions - 3-4 (or 1 onion)
  • Tomatoes -3
  • Garlic - 2 cloves
  • Green Chilli - 1
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli Powder - 1 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Coconut - 1/2 cup 
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - 1 spring
  • Salt - as needed
  • Oil - 1 tbsp

Method

  1. Grind together the coconut, green chilli and cumin seeds with little water to a very smooth paste. You can also use coconut milk instead.

  2. Heat oil in a pan and splutter the mustard seeds and curry leaves.

  3. Add the onions and garlic and fry till the onions turn golden brown.

  4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook till the tomatoes are soft.

  5. Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, garam masala powder and fry for a minute.

  6. Add the ground coconut paste, salt and required water.

  7. Let the gravy simmer for few minutes.

  8. Finally add chopped cilantro. Spicy tomato curry is ready to be served.

    Thanks for all your recipes! I made this one two nights ago for dinner, and my husband loved it as much as I did. I think the whole thing will go faster next time, but it was still pretty straightforward.

    I had to make a few adaptations. I couldn't find the chili powder, so I added a few drops of Sriracha chili sauce (the type with the angry rooster on the bottle) to the coconut paste. I am fortunate enough to have a spare coffee grinder which we use for spices, so I put the coconut in that. (It's been relegated to spice grinder since my husband received a nice coffee grinder as a gift!) It made it very easy to get a smooth paste, since I only had ground cumin. I made my own garam masala powder, too, so I'm feeling rather accomplished right now.

    Thanks again for this site. My husband had always said Indian food was too difficult to do; I'm glad I was able to prove him wrong, with your help.
