(Rabbit Dry Curry, Muyal Kuzhambu)
Rabbit Masala is a spicy dry curry preparation made with a blend of Indian spices. It is made in Kerala and Tamilnadu. Rabbit is a lean meat that is high in protein. It has a gamey taste and the texture is almost like chicken. This curry goes well with idli, dosa, appam, rice etc.
Recipe for Rabbit Masala
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Serves: 3-4
Ingredients
- Rabbit - 1 kg
- Onions or Small Onions (chopped) - 1/4 cup (chopped)
- Tomato (small) - 1 (chopped)
- Ginger-Garlic paste - 2 tbsp
- Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Red Chili Powder - 2 tsp
- Coriander Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Cumin Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Fennel Powder - 1/2 tsp
- Black Pepper Powder (freshly ground) - 1+1 tsp
- Curry Leaves - 1 spring
- Oil - 2 tbsp
- Ghee - 1 tsp
- Water - 1 cup
- Coriander leaves (chopped) - for garnish
- Salt - to taste
For Masala
- Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
- Pottukadalai - 1 tsp
- Poppu Seeds (Kasa Kasa) - 1 tsp
To Crush
- Garlic - 6 to 7 cloves
- Black Peppercons - 1 tsp
- Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
For Seasoning
- Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Fennel Seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Peppercons - 1 tsp
- Dried Red Chilies - 3 to 4
- Cinnamon - 1" piece
- Cardamom - 2
- Cloves - 3
- Curry Leaves - 1 sprig
Method
- Wash the rabbit pieces thoroughly in water 5 to 6 times. Add some turmeric and vineger to this. Let it rest for 5 minutes and wash again.
- Heat oil in a kadai, add the seasoning items - cumin seeds, fennel seeds, peppercons, dry red chilies, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, curry leaves.
- Add chopped onions and saute till it becomes golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, little salt and fry for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatos and saute for few minutes.
- Add red chili powder, coriander powder, fennel powder, cumin powder, black pepper powder, salt and little water.
- Add the rabbit pieces and fry together. Saute together for another couple of minutes so that the rabbit pieces are coated with all the masalas.
- Add 1 cup water and let it cook covered for 5 minutes.
- While this is cooking, crush the garlic, peppercons and cumin seeds. Also make a paste of grated coconut, poppy seeds and pottukadalai with litte water.
- Add the coconut paste and cook for another 5 minutes. This will be in semi-gravy consistency. If needed, add more water to get more gravy.
- Finally add the crushed pepper-garlic-cumin. This adds a nice flavour to the curry.
- After another 2-3 minutes of simmering, add 1 tsp ghee, chopped curry leaves and finely chopped coriander leaves. If you are a spice lover, add 1 tsp of freshly ground black peppercons too. Switch off and keep it covered for few minutes before serving.
Detailed Steps to make Rabbit Masala

Add red chili powder, coriander powder, fennel powder, cumin powder, black pepper powder, salt and little water. Cook for couple of minutes.
Add the rabbit pieces and fry together for another couple of minutes so that the rabbit pieces are coated with all the masalas.
Add 1 cup water. Let it cook covered for 5 minutes. Rabbit cooks really fast.

Serving Rabbit Masala
- Serve the spicy and warm mutton masala it with chapati, rice, aapam or with dosa. My favourite is to have with spongy set dosa.
