Beetroot is a root vegetable that is very common throughout India and other countries like America, Europe, Russia etc. It has a very attractive bright purplish red color. There are also a variety of beets which are yellowish in color known as golden beets. Beetroots can be eaten raw or cooked. It can be made into a soup, juice, soup, stir fried, boiled or pickled. In India, many sweet dishes are also made with beets as it has a natural sweetness to it. Beetroots are also used as a natural food color. The famous red velvet cake was traditionally made with beets. I have shared many recipes using beetroot below but before that I would like to share the health benefits of eating beetroot regularly.
First and foremost benefits of beets is that reduces blood pressure due to its high nitrate content. Those who have high BP can take this on a regular basis and see good results. Beets are low in calories but contains many essential vitamin and minerals. Consuming beets regularly also improves blood flow in the body especially to the brain. Beets are also rich in anti oxidants which help to reduce blood sugar and improve insulin sensitivity. Beetroot is good for your skin, hair and overall health. It detoxifies your blood and helps heal pimples. With regular intake it gives a radiant glow to your skin and also reduces aging. Beetroot is high in fiber and so is good for people trying to manage their weight.
I encourage everyone to include beets in your day to day meals at least once a week. Kids will love its color.
