(Gourds, Melons, Pumpkin, Ashgourd, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Acorn Squash, Butternut Squash, Spaghetti Squash, Bottlegourd)
All the plant species from the Cucurbita genus are referred to as gourds or squashes. These include pumpkins, American squash varieties like acorn squash, yellow squash, zucchini, spaghetti squash etc, cucumbers, melons and Asian gourds like bottle gourd, ash gourd, ridge gourd, ivy gourd, pointed gourd, snake gourd etc. Most of these are fruits but they do not have any sweetness or some have a mild sweetness. Hence they are consumed as vegetables when matured. Most of these can be consumed raw. Because of their mild flavor they are also used to make many sweet dishes around the world.
