Tamil New Year also known as Tamil Puthandu is celebrated on April 14th. It is the first day of Chitterai, the first month of the Tamil calender. It is celebrated by tamilians around the world - in India, Sri lanka, Malaysia, Mauritius and Singapore. The same day is celebrated in Kerala as Vishu.
People celebrate by wearing new dresses and a special festival food. One of the special dishes made this day is the Maanga Pachadi. It is a special dish which is a combination of all tastes - sweet, bitter, spicy, salty and sour. This pachadi signifies that life is a mixture of emotions - happiness, sadness, anger, fear and surprise.
