Salad is a mix of different ingredients which could include fresh green leafy vegetables, other vegetables, fruits, sprouts, cooked grains, cooked meat, eggs, nuts, cheese etc. It is always a good idea to include some kinds of salad as part of your regular diet, it may be as an appetizer or as a side salad. Kids will develop a taste for salads if introduced to them even when they are young. The raw vegetables are full of nutrition. They are low in calories yet high in anti-oxidants, vitamins and fiber. It gives a feeling of satisfaction and fullness while on diet.

Salads are usually flavored with some spices or a salad dressing. There are many salad dressings available commercially these days which you can use on any busy day. There are also many salad dressings that can be easily made at home. I have shared a few along with the recipes below.

In India, salads are traditionally served in the form of raitas and kachumber. In Raita, the vegetables are mixed with spiced beaten curd. I have a separate page with different raitas that are usually served as accompaniment to a main meal. The kachumbers are usually dressed with a simple lemon dressing. It can be served as an appetizer or as an accompaniment. It is also common to see an assortment of chopped vegetables served in weddings and celebrations along with an exotic meal. Fruits salads are often seen served as dessert with some ice cream. Here is a list of salad varieties that I often make at home which can be had as a light meal or appetizer. We enjoy salads as a family. Make and enjoy these healthy salads today.
