Shevgyachya Shenganchi Rassa (Maharashtrian Drumstick Gravy)

This is a Maharashtrian style drumstick (moringa) gravy recipe made with drumsticks and potatoes. This is called as Shevgyachya Shenganchi Rassa in Marathi. It is served with roti, poli or bhakari.

Recipe for Shevgyachya Shenganchi Rassa

Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4


  • Drumsticks (moringa) - 2
  • Potatos - 2 (medium size)
  • Onions - 2 big
  • Garlic cloves - 8-9
  • Kokum - 4 or 5
  • Oil - 2-3 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds (Jeera) - 1/2 tsp
  • Asafoetida (Hing) - a pinch
  • Turmeric Powder (Haldi) - 1/2 tsp
  • Red chili powder - 2 tsp
  • Goda masala - 2 tsp
  • Gud - a small piece
  • Fresh coriander (for garnishing) - as needed


  1. Peel drumstick and cut into pieces, wash the potatoes and cut into cubes don’t peel them.
  2. Slice onions length wise. Crush garlic in mortar and make it as a paste.
  3. Heat kadai and add 2-3 tsp oil, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds (jeera), asafoetida(hing) and let it splutter.
  4. Add haldi (turmeric powder) and onions. Let onion cook.
  5. Then add crushed garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Now add 2 tsp each of red chili powder and goda masala, salt to taste and stir till oil separates.
  7. Then add drumstick and potatoes and stir for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Add hot water till drumstick and potatoes swim. Cover with lid and allow it cook on medium flame for about 10-12 minutes.
  9. Remove the lid, stir and add small piece of gud for taste and 4-5 kokum. Stir on slow flame, let it simmer for 3-4 minutes. Garnish with finely chopped fresh coriander leaves and switch off.

Serving Suggestion

  • Serve the hot Shevgyachya Shenganchi Rassa with roti, poli or bhakari.
