Kola Urundai is spicy meat ball made from minced mutton or goat meat. Minced meat is mixed with a variety of spices and shaped to balls and then fried. It is a popular dish from the Chettinade region of Tamilnadu. Here is a simple recipe for Mutton Kola Urundai.

Recipe for Mutton Kola Urundai

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Serves: 4


  • Mutton - 1/4 kg (minced)
  • Red chili powder - as per your spice level
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Salt - as per your taste
  • Onion - 1 (chopped)
  • Coriander leaves - handful (Chopped)
  • Oil - for frying

Masala For Grinding

  • Cinnamon - 1" piece
  • Cloves - 2
  • Cardamom - 2
  • Fennel - 2 tsp
  • Ginger - 1" piece
  • Garlic - 2 cloves


  1. Grind cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and fennel coarsely.
  2. Add a piece of ginger and two cloves of garlic and then grind all to make a coarsely ground powder.
  3. In a pan, add oil and put the minced mutton into it.
  4. Saute for 5 minutes to remove the excess water in it.
  5. Add red chili powder and salt according to ur taste. Also add coriander powder, turmeric powder and the ground masala.
  6. Remove the pan from flame.
  7. Add finely chopped onion and coriander leaves and mix together.
  8. Make it into lemon sized balls.
  9. Heat oil in a pan and fry the balls in medium flame. Drain excess oil in a tissue paper. Enjoy it when hot.
