Sigappu Arisi Kozhukattai (Red Rice Dumplings)

I have already shared the recipe of traditional Paal Kolukattai and a variant with wheat flour. Here is another variation made with red rice flour. We all know the health benefits of red rice. It is a great idea to include it as often as we can in our diet. So here is one such interesting recipe – Red Rice Dumplings or Sigappu Arisi Kozhukattai.

Recipe For Sigappu Arisi Kozhukattai

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Serves: 3-4


  • Red Rice Flour (Sigappu Arisi Mavu) – 1 cup
  • Hot Water – 1 to 1.5 cups
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Grated Coconut – 2 tbsp (optional)
  • Naatu Sakkarai (Country Sugar) – 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coconut Milk – 3 cups


  1. Take the red rice flor in a mixing bowl. Add some salt and grated coconut. Coconut is added for texture.
  2. Add hot water little at a time and keep mixing to make a smooth dough.
  3. Make marble sized balls with the dough. Keep this in a plate.
  4. Take the coconut milk in a big pot. Add salt and bring to a boil.
  5. Once it comes to a rolling boil, add the balls carefully.
  6. Add 1 tbsp of red rice flour to this. This will help thicken the kozhukattai.
  7. Cook together on medium heat for 7-8 minutes. Mix once or twice in between to prevent the balls from sticking to the bottom.
  8. Add nattu chakkarai to taste. Also add crushed cardamom. 
  9. Cook together for 1-2 minutes till the liquid becomes thick. Switch off and enjoy.

Serving Suggestion

  • You don't need any side dish or condiment for Sigappu Arisi Kozhukattai. You can have the warm Sigappu Arisi Kozhukattai all by itself for breakfast.
