(Marble Cake, Vanilla Chocolate Cake)
Marble Cake is a cake in which we make cake batter in two different colours. The most common colour and flavors are vanilla and chocolate. The cake is made by layering the batters alternatively. It is then blended slightly with a stick or skewer to create a marble pattern. You can also make fruit flavored marble cake like strawberry marble cake too.
Zebra Cake is a type of marble cake in which equal quantities of the two cake batters are poured alternatively in the middle of the cake pan. This creates a striped pattern similar to the Zebra. Here is a zebra cake recipe with chocolate and vanilla flavors.

Chocolate Batter
- All Purpose Flour (Maida) - 1 cup
- Cocoa Powder - 1/4 cup
- Sugar - 3/4 cup
- Oil - 1/2 cup
- Milk - 1/2 cup
- Vanilla Extract - 1 tsp
- Eggs - 2 (Use 1/2 cup curd & 1/2 tsp Baking Soda instead for eggless version)
- Baking Powder - 1 tsp
- Salt - a pinch
Method
Vanilla Batter
- Take the eggs (or curd) in a mixing bowl and beat it. Add sugar, vanilla extract, oil and milk to this and mix well.
- Sieve the all purpose flour, salt and baking powder into the wet mixture while mixing continuously till you get a smooth batter.
Chocolate Batter
- In another bowl, beat the eggs (or curd). Add sugar, oil, vanilla extract and milk to this. Keep mixing till it becomes creamy and pale.
- Sieve the all purpose flour, salt and baking powder into the wet mixture while mixing continuously. You now have a smooth chocolate batter.
Making Zebra Patterned Cake
- Now the chocolate flavored brown batter and the vanilla flavored white batter are all ready to make the zebra print.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degree F (180 degree C).
- Take a 9" round cake pan or a loaf pan. (If needed, grease the cake pan with butter and add a dusting of flour. Since I used a silicone cake pan, I din't have to do this.)
- To make the zebra pattern, take about 1/4 cup of the white vanilla batter and pour in the center of the cake pan.
- Next pour the same amount (about 1/4 cup) of the brown chocolate batter on top of the white batter and in the center of the pan.
- Repeat the process alternating the batter. The batter will spread creating the zebra print.
- Tap the cake pan to remove any air bubbles.
- Bake the cake for about 40 minutes till a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Once it cools, put some powdered sugar or chocolate syrup on top. Enjoy your zebra cake.
Detailed Steps to make Zebra Cake
Prepare the vanilla and chocolate cake batters using the ingredients as mentioned above.
Pour a ladleful of the vanilla batter in the middle of the cake pan. Next add a ladleful of the chocolate batter.
Repeat this process alternatively till the batter finishes. You can see the zebra pattern forming.
Tap the cake pan to remove any air bubbles.
Bake it in a 350 degree F over for about 45 minutes.
Cool and enjoy a slice.
Variations
- You can also make zebra cup cakes.
- Instead of chocolate and vanilla flavors, you can also try with different fruit flavors. eg :- You can make a white batter and a strawberry batter to make strawberry zebra cakes.
- If you do not want to make cake batters with two different flavors, just add two different food coloring and make the zebra pattern.
- Here is the picture of zebra cake sent by Raji. She made the zebra print with white vanilla cake and vanilla cake with orange food colour. Do experiment with your own flavours and colours.
