Horsegram Curry

(Kulith Curry, Kollu Kulambu, Kaanam Curry, Muthira Curry)
Ingredients

Horse gram - 50 gms
Baking soda - a pinch
Coriander seeds - 1 tsp
Red chilli - 1
Oil - 1 tsp
Grated coconut - 2 tbsp
Salt -  to tasteFor tempering
Oil - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida - pinch
Method
1. Soak the horse gram overnight.  You must pick the same as there may be stones in it.  
2. Pressure cook the same adding salt and baking soda till soft.
3. Take a kadai and pour oil in it.  Roast the coriander seeds and red chilli.  When it is done, add the coconut and sauté till the coconut becomes slightly brown.  
4. When it cools, add water and grind it.

5. Heat the kadai, add oil and  add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. when it splutters, add asafoetida, curry leaves and add the cooked horse gram.

6. After it boils, add the ground paste in it and boil for two minutes. Garnish with coriander leaves.  
Serve hot with chapati or rice.

I don’t see the need for baking soda unless there is a secret benefit. It will be good without it and with the addition of scrapings of fresh coconut. Yummy!

It makes the bean softer while cooking. You can skip it if you do not prefer.

This horse gram curry is nice but I used tender coconut and without baking powder I boiled .. Its good for health also
