Figs as a fruit is well known. It is found fresh and also in dried form. It is rich in antioxidants and is recommended for patients recovering from any disease. However, many wouldn’t have seen the raw form of figs in markets. Yes, Raw Figs also known as athikai in Tamil is sold by some street vendors. Those who have access to fig tree often make dishes with this. Athikai can be made as Poriyal, Kootu, Sabzi or Curry. I got introduced to this vegetable through my colleague. Since I couldn’t find this in vegetable shops, I asked her to get me some from her tree. The first recipe that I tried was this Athikai Poriyal. It pairs up great with some rice and sambar.
Recipe For Athikaai Poriyal
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4-6
Ingredients
- Raw figs (athikkai) – 2 cups
- Onion – 1
- Green Chilies – 3
- Turmeric Powder – ½ tsp
- Oil (preferably coconut oil) – 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Urad dal (split black gram) – 1 tsp
- Asafoetida (hing) – a pinch
- Curry leaves - few
- Salt - to taste
- Freshly grated coconut - ¼ cup
Method
- Wash the raw fig (athikai) and cut it into halves. Put it in a bowl of water to remove any worms inside.
- Heat a kadai, add oil and pop mustard seeds. Add urad dal, asafoetida and curry leaves.
- Add chopped onion and green chilies. Saute for a minute.
- Add the chopped figs, some salt and turmeric powder. Add 1-2 tbsp of water, cover with a lid and cook over medium flame for about 5-7 minutes. Keep stirring in between.
- When the athikai is cooked soft, add freshly grated coconut and saute for about 2 minutes. All the moisture should dry up. Your tasty athikai poriyal is now ready to be served.
