Foxtail Millet Upma (Thinai Upma)

Recently I bought some foxtail millet from an Indian grocery shop. Today, I prepared an upma using this millet. Here is the recipe. Its a healthy food.

Recipe For Foxtail Millet Upma

Ingredients

  • Foxtail millet - 1.5 cup
  • Onion- 1 small or half of a big onion
  • Green chillies- 3
  • Curry leaves- few
  • urid dhal- 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin- 1 teaspoon
  • Channa dhal- 1 teaspoon
  • Mixed vegetables-1.5  cup (carrot, beans, tomato)
  • Pepper powder- 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - as necessary
  • Chilly powder- 1 teaspoon( optional)
  • oil or ghee- 2 teaspoon
  • chopped corriander leaves - optional
  • cashews and peanuts - 1 teaspoon each
  • Ginger garlic paste- 0.5 teaspoon

Method

  1. Dry roast the foxtail millet (in low flame) for about 3 to 4 minutes and keep it aside
  2. In a pan, add oil or ghee. When it is heat, add curry leaves, urid dhal, channa dhal, cashews and peanuts.
  3. Add onion and saute. Now add ginger garlic paste and chilly. Saute. Add salt, turmeric powder, chilly powder and bit of pepper powder now. 
  4. Add the cut vegetables and let it cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
  5. Add about 1/2 cup of hot water and then add the millet and stir.
  6. cover and cook till its fully cooked. Adjust the water and salt as necessary.
  7. Stir and see if its fully done.
  8. Add corriander leaves (optional).
  9. Switch off the stove. Ready to eat now.
