Methi Chicken, also known as Murg Methi is a popular Chicken dish prepared with chicken and fresh fenugreek (methi) leaves. The methi leaves imparts a unique flavour to the chicken dish. The curry is spicy with a perfect blend of slight bitterness from the methi and sourness from the curd. Methi leaves have a whole lot of health benefits and is recommended for pregnant ladies and nursing moms. Methi combined with chicken makes it very delectable and will surely make everyone to fall in love with fenugreek leaves. 

Methi Chicken goes well with white rice, pulao, chapathi or paratha. Its a great option to make kids eat fenugreek leaves. Next time you buy chicken, be sure to buy a bunch of fenugreek leaves and make this delicious methi murgh.

Recipe for Fresh Methi Chicken

Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Serves: 4


  • Chicken - 1 lb (cut into bite size pieces)
  • Fenugreek Leaves (Methi) - 1 bunch (about 2 cups)
  • Onion - 2 (finely chopped)
  • Green Chillies - 2
  • Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tbsp
  • Tomatoes - 2 (pureed)
  • Yogurt - 2 tbsp (beaten)
  • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Red Chili Powder - 3 tsp
  • Coriander Powder - 2 tsp
  • Cumin Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Fennel Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam Masala Powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin Seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Fennel seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - as needed
  • Oil - 3 tbsp


  1. Take a heavy bottomed pan, heat some oil and splutter the cumin and fennel seeds.
  2. Add the chopped onions and saute till it turns golden brown.
  3. Add the ginger-garlic paste and green chillies. Fry for a minute till the raw smell vanishes.
  4. Add the chicken pieces, beaten yogurt and salt. Stir fry for few minutes.
  5. Add all the dry spice powders (coriander, cumin, red chili, turmeric and fennel powders).
  6. Add the tomato puree and required water. If you want a dry dish add very little water.
  7. Cover and cook for about 15 minutes till the oil separates from the masala. 
  8. Finally add the methi leaves and garam masala powder.
  9. Cook for couple of minutes and switch off. Tasty methi chicken curry is ready to be served.

We tried this yesterday and loved it :) very simple and tasty! Only change was that we had already marinated the chicken in the yogurt and ginger-garlic paste. Hence didn't add these again in the gravy.

You are adding methi leaves at the end and cooking it for 1 minute only.. how the methi leaves will be cooked with in 1 minute..I believe it will take atleast 5-6 minutes to be cooked properly..

Yes, lat one minute is sufficient to cook the leaves while retaining the nutrients. The heat of the gravy will continue to cook it a little more.

    I made the curry today, but it was red color instead of green how come? it did not look anything like the picture but the taste was good.

    Hi Reena, Don't worry about the colour. It all depends on the colour of the spice powders, its proportions etc. As long as you like the taste, its good. :-)
