Spicy Black Pomfret Curry

Zanazanit Halwa kalvan is a spicy fish curry made with the tasty black pomfret fish and roasted grated coconut and onion. This spicy fish curry goes very well with tandalachi bhakri. This combination is famous in coastal Maharashtra.

Recipe for Spicy Black Pomfret Curry

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Serves: 4


  • Black pomfret - roughly 500 gms
  • Grated roasted dry coconut - 1 cup
  • Garlic cloves - 12-15
  • Ginger - 1-1.5 inch
  • Roasted onion - 1 big
  • Fresh coriander leaves (chopped) - 1 cup
  • Green chilies - 2-3
  • Home red masala - 3 tsp
  • Trmeric Powder (Haldi) - 1/2 tsp
  • Tamarind (Imli) thick juice - 3/4 cup
  • Oil - 2-3 tbsp
  • Hot water - 1-1.5 cup
  • Salt - to taste

Spicy Black Pomfret Curry Ingredients


  1. Roast grated coconut and onion separately.
  2. Making vaatan: In a mixie jar, grind roasted coconut, roasted onion, garlic, ginger, coriander leaves, green chilies to a smooth paste. You can add few drops of water to grind it smoothly.
  3. Clean the pomfret (halwa) fish and make into pieces.
  4. Heat a pan, add oil and heat it. Now add vatan and stir it properly.
  5. Add homemade red dry masala, salt, turmeric powder and stir till oil separates.
  6. Now add hot water and tamarind paste and stir again.
  7. Add the fish pieces, stir and let it cook. Keep the pan covered.
  8. If the fish is fresh, it will cook within 3-4 minutes. Switch off.

Serving Black Pomfret Curry

  • Garnish the hot and spicy black pomfret curry with fresh chopped coriander and serve with tandalachi bhakri or plain rice.
