(Nagercoil Fish Curry, Nanjil Style Fish Curry)

This is a traditional preparation of fish curry in Kanyakumari district of Tamilnadu. It is also known as Fish Aanam in some places. The fish curry made in other places has onions, tomatoes etc. In this particular curry, the base gravy is made with grated coconut. With these simple ingredients, the gravy tastes awesome. It is very delicious with some hot rice.
Recipe For Kanyakumari Fish Curry
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients
- Fish - 1/2 kg
- Tamarind - lemon size
- Salt - to taste
- Coconut oil - 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
- Curry leaves - 1 spring
For Masala
- Grated Coconut - 1/2 cup
- Small onions - 4
- Garlic - 2 cloves
- Green chili - 1
- Red Chili powder - 1 tbsp
- Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
- Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
Method
- Grind all the ingredients under 'For masala' to a smooth paste. Soak the tamarind in some water and squeeze out the juice.
- Heat oil in a vessel or clay pot, pop mustard seeds, curry leaves.
- Add the ground masala paste, tamarind water, fish pieces, salt and little water. If preferred, add drumstick and raw mango too.
- Bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. Delicious fish curry is ready.
