Vazhaipoo bajji is an interesting snack made with banana flower. Banana florets are rich in fibre, anti-oxidants and many more nutrients. Generally poriyal or usili is made with vazhaipoo. Bajji is not commonly made with Vazhaipoo.
I once saw this recipe in a cookery show. I was fascinated and wanted to give it a try. I made this the very next day and enjoyed it. Its a great way to include banana flower in your diet. Everyone would love it. The only problem is that cleaning of banana flower takes some time. Do try this recipe sometime.
Recipe For Vazhaipoo Bajji
Preparation Time: 40 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4

- Vazhaipoo (Banana flower) – 1/2 (Use only the big florets)
- Gram Flour (Kadalai Maavu) – 1 cup
- Rice flour – 2 tbsp
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Asafoetida - a pinch

Method
- Clean the banana flower. I have shared the detailed steps here. Use only the big florets for making bajji.
- In a bowl, take gram flour, rice flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, asafoetida and salt. Add water little by little to make a thick paste.
- Finally add baking soda and mix. In the meantime, heat oil in a kadai for frying.
- Take each floret and dip in the batter so that it is well coated. Drop it in the hot oil.
- Fry until it turns golden brown and crispy. Repeat with all the florets.
- Drain excess oil using a tissue paper.
Serving Suggestion
- Server the warm Vazhaipoo Bajji with a hot cup of tea.
Tips
- You can make it little more drier like pakodas too.
