Snakegourd Kootu

Snake gourd coot is a traditional South Indian side dish that goes well with rice or roti

Recipe for Snake Gourd Kootu

Preparation Time : 10 minutes
Cooking Time : 20 minutes
Serves : 4

Ingredients

  • Snake Gourd - 1 (cut into small pieces)
  • Toor dal (or Channa Dal or Moong Dal) - 1/2 cup
  • Ginger Garlic paste - 1 tsp
  • Salt - to taste

For Seasoning

  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves - 1 spring
  • Dry Red chillies - 2
  • Asafoetida - a pinch

To Grind

  • Coconut - 3-4 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Green (or Red) chillies - 2
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp

Method

  1. Grind coconut, turmeric, cumin seeds, green chillies together, make a coarse paste and keep aside.
  2. Pressure cook the dal separately. It should be soft but not mushy. You could use any dal - toor dal, channa dal or moong dal.
  3. Heat oil in a kadai. Once heated put the mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chillies for tadka.
  4. Then add ginger garlic paste, asafoetida powder and the snake gourd pieces. Let it cook.
  5. Once the veggies are 3/4 done, add the dhal and required salt. Let them cook together for sometime.
  6. Then add the ground coconut mixture. Mix well and let it cook for few minutes. Snake gourd kootu is done.

Serving Snake Gourd Kootu

  • Serve the warm snake gourd kootu with white rice or with chapatti.
