(Ground Beef Burger, Hamburger with Beef Patty and Caramelized Onions)
Jump to recipe ↓
My whole family is a big fan of Hamburgers. The most common type of hamburgers are the ones made with beef patty. There are also known as Beef Burgers. A basic beef burger has a grilled or pan fried patties sandwiched between burger buns along with lettuce, onion and tomato slices.
Today I am sharing Beef Burgers with Caramelized Onions. Thinly sliced onions are sauteed until it becomes golden brown and caramelized. This is added on top of the patty. This adds a nice taste as well as makes the burger juicier. Do give this a try.
If you do not eat beef, try the same recipe with ground turkey, ground chicken or lamb. Serve the burgers with some potato fries and a side salad to make a complete meal.
Recipe for Caramelized Onion Beef Burger
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients
- Burger Buns - 4
- Onions - 2 big (for caramelizing)
- Sugar - 1/4 tsp
- Butter – for toasting the buns
- Cheese Slices - 4
- Mayonnaise - 4 tbsp
- Iceberg Lettuce (or any other lettuce) – 4 leaves
- Tomato circles – 4 pieces
- Mustard Sauce (or Red chili Sauce) – 2 tsp
For Beef Patties
- Ground Beef – 1/2 kg (1 lb)
- Onion Powder - 2 tsp (or 1 onion finely chopped)
- Garlic Powder – 1 tsp (or 3-4 cloves crushed)
- Parsley (or any other herbs) – 2 tbsp (finely chopped or 1 tsp dried)
- Soya Sauce - 2 tsp
- Lemon Juice - 1/2 tsp
- Salt – to taste (about 1 tsp)
- Black Pepper Crushed – 1 tsp
Method
- Peel the skin of 2 big onions. slice them and put in a tawa. Add 1/4 tsp sugar and let it cook on medium low heat. Keep stirring occasionally and continue till the onions develop a golden brown colour.
- Wash the lettuce. Wash, slice the tomatoes and keep them ready.
- Take the ground beef in a strainer and rinse it under running water. Leave the strainer on another vessel, so that all the water drains off the meat.
- After 5-10 minutes, all the liquid must have drained out. Now take the meat in a bowl. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, parsley leaves, soya sauce, lemon juice, salt and pepper powder.
- Mix everything with your hands just until it all comes together. Do not over-mix.
- Divide the mixture roughly into 4 equal parts. Wet your hands, take one portion of the ground meat mixture and shape it into a patty. Press in the middle of the patty with your thumb to form an indentation. This way, the patties won't bulge up in the center while cooking.
- The patty should be the size of the burger buns. Shape all the 4 patties and keep it ready. First we will toast the buns.
- Heat a dosa tawa or stove top grill pan. Cut the burger buns in half. Add some butter and toast the burger buns. Remove them onto a plate.
- Now gently place the formed patties on the same griddle. Cook for about 4 minutes on the first side.
- Flip the patties and cook for about 3 minutes on the other side. By now the patties will be cooked and you will get nice grill marks. (Note :- When you gently press in the center of your patty with a spatula, the juices oozing out should be colorless. If it is pink, cook the patties for 1 or 2 minutes more. Do not overcook as the patties will become hard.)
- Now place a cheese slice on each patty. In just a minute, the cheese will start melting. Assemble the burger immediately and enjoy for best taste.
- Take the lower part of the bun, spread some mayonnaise and mustard sauce. Place 1 or 2 slices of tomatoes on this. Carefully place the grilled patty on top. Spoon out some caramelized onions on this.
- Place a lettuce leaf and close the burger with the top bun. You can spread some hot sauce or tomato sauce to this top bun if you prefer. Put a tooth pick in the middle to hold the sandwich and serve.
