Ambe dal or watalee dal is a Maharashtrian chutney / salad preparation. In the month of Chaitra, the first month of the Marathi new year its the time when mangoes - raw and ripe are in season. Ambe dal is a must for Chaitra Gauri Haldi-Kumkum along with panha (raw mango drink).

Recipe For Ambe Dal

Preparation time : 10 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • Channa Dal - 1 cup
  • Raw Mango - 1/2 - 3/4 cup
  • Fresh Coriander leaves - 1/4 cup (finely chopped)
  • Green chilies - 3-4
  • Ginger - 1 inch
  • Curry leaves (kadipatta) - 1 string
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds ( jeera) - 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric ( haldi) powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Asafoetida ( hing) - 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilies - 1-2
  • Salt and sugar to taste

Method

  1. Soak channa dal for about 7-8 hours.
  2. Wash soaked dal and drain all water from it. In a mixi jar add channa dal, green chilies, ginger and grind coarsely. (do not add water)  
  3. Grate raw mango (not too fine).
  4. In a bowl take coarsely ground dal mixture, to it add the grated mango, finely chopped fresh coriander leaves, salt and sugar. Give it a good mix.
  5. Heat oil in tadka pan, to it add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, turmeric powder, curry leaves and red chilies.  Allow it to splutter.
  6. Pour this tadka to the mixture in the bowl and give a good mix.
  7. Ambe dal is ready serve with panha.
