Papadam Thoran is a delicious side dish made with papadams, also known papads or appalam. It is made in Kerala when no vegetables are on hand or just when people want to eat something different. My mom and grandma used to make this thorn once in a while. Generally this dish is made with just onions and papadams. However you can add vegetables like cabbage or grated carrot also. This dish has a totally different texture as compared to other thorans. You will surely enjoy it. Here's a simple recipe for making Papadum Thoran.
Recipe for Papadam Thoran

Ingredients
- Papadams (Papad/ Appalam) – 6
- Onion – 2 small
- Green Chili -1
- Red Chili Powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
- Salt – to taste
- Grated Coconut – ½ cup
- Oil – for frying papadams
For Tempering
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
- Cumin Seeds – ¼ tsp
- Asafoetida – a pinch
- Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
Method
- Heat oil for deep frying the papadams. Roast the papadams.
- Crush the papadams into small pieces using your hands. Don’t make it too small.
- Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and asafoetida. Let the seeds pop.
- Add chopped onions, green chili and curry leaves. Saute until the onion becomes translucent.
- Add grated coconut, required salt, turmeric powder and red chili powder. Saute on medium low heat until it turns golden brown.
- Add the broken papadum pieces to this and toss well. Cook for couple of minutes and switch off.
Serving Suggestion
- Serve as a side dish with rice and any curry of your choice.
- This can be served as a snack or as a side for chapathis.
