Pacha Manga Thogayal or Raw Mango Chutney is a traditional South Indian dish made with raw green mangoes. It's a type of chutney or relish that's typically spicy, tangy, and flavorful. This is the time of the year when raw mangoes are available in plenty. This thuvayal (or chutney) is delicious to have with some hot white rice, idli or dosas. Do give this a try.
Recipe For Pacha Manga Thogayal
Ingredients
- Raw Mango – 1 (peeled and chopped)
- Dry Red Chilies/ Green Chilies – 2
- Coconut Pieces/ Grated Coconut – ¼ cup
- Urad Dal – 1 tbsp
- Ginger – ½” piece
- Salt – to taste
For Seasoning
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
- Curry Leaves – few
- Asafoetida – a pinch
Method
- Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a pan. Add urad dal, green chilies (or red chilies) and curry leaves and saute for a minute.
- Add grated coconut and saute for a minute. Also add the chopped mango pieces, ginger and saute for a minute.
- Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down.
- Once cooled, transfer the mixture to a blender or mixie jar. Add salt and grind into a coarse paste.
- In another small pan, heat little oil. Pop the mustard seeds and add a pinch of asafoetida. Pour this tempering over the ground thuvayal and mix well.
Method
- Serve the fresh pacha manga thogayal with plain white rice.
- It also goes well with south Indian tiffin varieties like idli or dosas
