Onion Vadai is a crispy and flavorful South Indian snack made with thinly sliced onions mixed in a spiced gram flour and rice flour batter. Enhanced with curry leaves, cumin seeds, cashews, and a hint of asafoetida, these deep-fried fritters are golden, crunchy, and perfect as an evening snack with hot chai. Onion Vadai also pairs well as a side dish with variety rice or can be repurposed into dishes like kadi pakodi or pakoda mor kulambu. A simple and satisfying treat for any occasion!
Recipe For Onion Vada
Ingredients
- Onion - 2
- Gram Flour (Besan) - 1.5 cup or as needed
- Rice Flour - 1/2 cup
- Green Chillies - 3 (sliced) / Red Chilly Powder - 1 tsp
- Curry Leaves - handful (chopped)
- Cashews - handful (chopped)
- Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
- Asafoetida - a pinch
- Salt - as needed
- Oil - for deep frying
Method
- Heat the oil in a kadai for deep frying.
- Make thin slices of the onions and sprinkle some salt on it.
- Add the chopped curry leaves, cumin seeds and cashews.
- Add asafoetida, chilly powder (or green chillies), rice flour and the gram flour to this.
- Add 1 or 2 tbsp of the hot oil along with this and mix everything together.
- The salt draws out the moisture from the onions. If needed, just sprinkle few drops of water and make a dough.
- Pinch a small portion of the dough and drop it in the medium hot oil.
- Fry till golden brown.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve this with hot chai as a snack.
- You can also serve this as a side-dish with any variety rice.
- The left overs can be used to make kadi pakodi or pakoda mor kulambu.
