(No Oven Pizza, Stove Top Pizza)

I already shared the traditional Pizza recipe and a healthy pizza variation made with Ragi flour crust. Some of my friends personally called me and asked if there was some way to make pizza without oven. It was for this reason I tried to make Pizza on the stove top using a tawa.
While making tawa pizza, you need to start by cooking the base at high heat. Once the bottom is browned, you need to flip the base, add the sauce and toppings. Reduce the heat to the lowest setting and cook for few minutes. The good thing about stove top cooking is that it is faster. If you plan to make for your entire family, this method is so convenient and quick. On the other hand, if you cook on high heat or a little longer, you will end up burning your base or making it harder. So be a little alert while making pizza on the stove top.
Recipe For Tawa Pizza
Preparation time: 40 minutes (and 2 hours of proofing time)
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients
- Pizza Dough - as required
- Pizza Sauce - as required (See recipe)
- Toppings - as required (I have used chicken pepperoni. You can se colourful bell peppers, onion slices, mushrooms, sweetcorn, pineapple, spinach etc.)
- Shredded Cheese (I use a blend of cheddar and mozzarella cheese) - as required (I used about 400 gms)
Preparation
- Prepare the pizza base at least 2 hours ahead and leave it to proof. Check out my regular pizza base and ragi pizza base.
- Also make the pizza sauce. Keep the toppings ready.
Method
- Take a heavy bottomed tawa and put some oil.
- Take a golf ball size of pizza dough and place in the middle of the tawa. Press with your fingers to flatten it. I prefer to roll out the dough on the tawa itself.
- Place the skillet (tawa) on the stove top over medium heat. Cook for 3-4 minutes till crust gets brown spots at the bottom. A few bubbles appear on top.
- Now it is ready to be flipped. Before that, reduce the flame to the lowest setting. Using a long flat spatula or a plate, gently flip the base without breaking.
- Spread few drops of olive oil on top and spread generously with pizza sauce. Top it with lots of shredded cheese. Arrange your favourite toppings.
- Cover with a lid and cook it for 5-7 minutes until the cheese melts. The base will be cooked by now. Slightly lift the base to see if it has become golden brown.
- Carefully transfer to a plate, cut into wedges and enjoy while it is hot. You can make your next pizza.
Detailed Steps to make Ragi Pizza
Prepare the pizza base at least 2 hours ahead and leave it to proof. Today I have made Pizza with Ragi flour crust.
Prepare the pizza sauce and keep the toppings ready. Today I have used my homemade pizza sauce and for topping, chicken pepperoni, pickled jalapenos and black olives.
Take a heavy bottomed tawa and put some oil. Take a golf ball size of pizza dough and place in the middle of the tawa.
Press with your fingers to flatten it.
Place the skillet (tawa) on the stove top over medium heat. Cook for 3-5 minutes till crust is browned from the bottom.
Now it is ready to be flipped.
Before that reduce the flame to the lowest setting. Using a long spatula or a plate, gently flip the base without breaking.
Spread few drops of olive oil on top and spread generously with pizza sauce. Arrange your favourite toppings.
Top it with lots of shredded cheese.
Cover with a lid and cook it for 10 minutes until the cheese melts. The base will be cooked by now.
Carefully transfer to a plate, cut into wedges and enjoy while it is hot.
